Dead Poets Society - Movie Review

"Gather your rosebuds while ye may..."

I try not to give ratings or compare movies... but if I'd have to - this movie would definitely be in my top 10 list of favourite movies of all time... of all time

It's a story about the very thing that binds us, yet tears our society apart - conformity, discipline, obedience...

It is a story about the senior students of the Welton Academy being inspired by their English teacher to change their lives of conformity through literature and poetry. Robin Williams stars as the charismatic teacher John Keating, Robert Sean Leonard stars as Neil Perry (yeah, young Dr. Wilson) and Ethan Hawke stars as Todd Anderson. All of the above are extremely competent in their roles, especially RSL, he outshone everybody in this movie. Props go to all the actors playing the students, they all were... yeah, that's the word... authentic!
I watched this movie for the first time when I was 18 and hell, I sympathised with these guys...

This movie ignited the small fire inside me that burned away all the bullshit I've learnt in school on literature lessons and made me re-evaluate poetry. I know it may sound cliché, but this movie did change my life. Hell, I was emotional days after watching it for the first time.

They say you hit mental puberty in your early 20s... Well, I know that I hit it hard when I watched this movie. It changed the way I viewed art, life, human values. It changed my viewpoint on many things, including cinema.

Directed by Peter Weir, this movie is the prime example that you don't need to spend gazillions on special effects to make a good movie... This is not a typical blockbuster that you see in cinema these days, movies like that are not done for the money, movies like that are done for the art...
